Hansa: From Village Dreams to a City of Hope
I’m Hansa Sandaruwan from Minuwangoda.
I’ve loved art since I was young. After finishing my A/Ls at a village school, I moved to Colombo with my parents’ support, full of big dreams and determination to make them come true.
Now, I’m studying for my degree at the University of Visual and Performing Arts in Colombo and pursuing my artistic journey. This is a difficult time in my life, but I see Colombo as a city of hope. I even made a painting called City of Hope, inspired by both the city and my experiences here. You can see the painting below.
City of Hope
This painting tells the story of my journey. The black and white textured background at the bottom stands for the obstacles, hardships, and difficulties I have faced. Even in the dark water, you can see our hopes floating. In this city, we are all chasing our dreams.
At the top of the painting, I added a reference to Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night, which is very meaningful to me. Even when we work hard for our biggest dreams, there is often a deep feeling of loneliness and solitude inside us. It is difficult to explain and often goes unnoticed by others.
Colombo is the place where I hope my dreams will come true, but it is also a difficult city. I feel torn between hope and challenge, and I carry loneliness in my heart. That is why I painted the endless race of chasing my dreams on this canvas.
